Accept PayPal Payments in Crypto: Top 3 Options for 2026

PayPal checkout with USDC payouts, PayPal-funded crypto and PayPal's own Pay with Crypto explained, with three providers compared on fees and rules.

By Paymegate Team · Published October 15, 2026

If you want to accept PayPal payments in crypto, the first thing to know is that "PayPal plus crypto" means three different flows in 2026: a customer pays from a PayPal account and you receive a stablecoin, a customer uses PayPal to buy crypto and then pays you on-chain, or a customer pays in crypto and you receive US dollars through PayPal itself. This guide compares three providers that cover the first two, explains how PayPal's own Pay with Crypto fits in, and sets out the fees, settlement times and compliance points you need to check. Fees and features were checked on 15 October 2026.

Quick answer: PayMeGate is our pick for merchants who want customers to pay from their PayPal account while settlement lands in USDC in a wallet they control. Its card gateway costs 1% plus the payment provider's fee, lists PayPal, Visa, Mastercard, Apple Pay and Google Pay, and pays out instantly in USDC with minimum orders from $1 to $30. MoonPay lets customers in the US, UK and most of the EU fund crypto purchases from a PayPal account, and NOWPayments is a crypto gateway with card and wallet on-ramps but no PayPal option on its pages. PayPal's own Pay with Crypto works the other way round: crypto in, US dollars out.

Editorial disclosure

PayMeGate publishes this article and sells payment processing software, so we rank our own service first. Fees and features below were checked on each provider's official website on 15 October 2026. We have not run test transactions through the competitors, and terms change often, so confirm current fees and requirements before you sign up. What "accept PayPal payments in crypto" really means

There are three ways to combine PayPal and crypto, and they are easy to mix up:

  1. PayPal in, stablecoin out. The customer checks out with their PayPal account, paying from the PayPal balance, a linked bank account or a debit card. A payment provider converts the payment and the merchant receives a stablecoin such as USDC. This is the flow PayMeGate is built around.
  2. PayPal used to buy crypto. The customer links a PayPal account inside an on-ramp such as MoonPay to buy crypto, then the crypto is sent to the merchant's wallet or a crypto checkout. The crypto purchase is a separate step.
  3. Crypto in, dollars out. The customer pays with crypto from a wallet, and the merchant receives US dollars in a PayPal account. This is PayPal's own Pay with Crypto, which suits US merchants who want to accept crypto payments without touching digital assets.

Card payments to crypto work the same way as the first flow: a regulated payment provider takes the card or wallet payment in US dollars, and the merchant's payout is made in a stablecoin. The merchant never handles the card data.

PayPal's own Pay with Crypto (the reverse flow)

PayPal launched Pay with Crypto for US merchants in 2025. It needs a verified US PayPal Business account, accepts approximately 100 cryptocurrencies including Bitcoin, Ethereum and PayPal USD, and settles in your preferred local currency based on the account's primary currency, according to PayPal's developer page. The same page says billing agreements, recurring payments, vaulted payments and multi-seller setups are not supported, integration runs through the Orders V2 API, and PayPal claims a reach of over 650 million pro-crypto consumers worldwide. Its help page (read on 15 October 2026) adds that buyers can pay from eligible third-party and self-hosted wallets, the crypto is converted to USD "near instant (seconds)", and payout follows PayPal's normal merchant funding schedule. Merchants must be approved for Expanded Checkout, cannot accept crypto directly, and New York merchants cannot use it yet. Refunds go back in PayPal USD (PYUSD) or another supported stablecoin, and crypto payments are not subject to disputes or chargebacks. At launch in July 2025, PayPal said the service supported 100+ cryptocurrencies and wallets such as Coinbase, Binance, Kraken, Phantom and MetaMask, with a 0.99% transaction rate that applied until 31 July 2026; check the current rate in your PayPal account.

PayPal USD (PYUSD) and crypto in a PayPal account

PYUSD is a dollar stablecoin issued by Paxos Trust Company and described by PayPal as fully backed by US dollar deposits, US treasuries and similar cash equivalents. PayPal says it charges no fee to buy, sell, hold or transfer PYUSD, and holders who opt in can earn rewards at a variable 4% rewards rate, paid monthly in PYUSD; that crypto offer can change at any time. PayPal Digital, Inc. is chartered by the New York State Department of Financial Services as a limited purpose trust company, one of the regulatory frameworks behind PayPal's crypto service.

The primary holder of an eligible US PayPal business account can also buy and sell crypto, hold a crypto balance and buy cryptocurrency such as PYUSD inside the PayPal account; secondary users can only view the crypto hub. Each buy or sell shows the transaction fee and an exchange rate that refreshes often, and converting PYUSD to another coin carries fees. Crypto held this way is an investment with price risk, not a payment method your customers see, so it does not help you accept payments from buyers who want to pay with PayPal.

Consumers also link PayPal to exchanges: Coinbase, for example, publishes a PayPal FAQ for customers who connect the two accounts.

How we chose these providers

  • PayPal support stated on the provider's own pages, not in third-party reviews.
  • Settlement: which asset the merchant receives, where it lands and how fast.
  • Fees: published platform fees, plus who sets provider and network fees.
  • Merchant onboarding: what signup asks for, and whether customers may face identity checks.
  • Acceptable use and jurisdictions: prohibited businesses and excluded countries.
  • Integration: payment links, API, plugins and webhooks.
  • Security: signed webhooks, wallet control and sanctions screening, because a secure payout is worth more than a cheap one.

1. PayMeGate: PayPal checkout with USDC settlement

PayMeGate is a payment gateway that lets customers pay from a PayPal account, with cards or in crypto, and sends the merchant's payout to a wallet the merchant configures.

PayMeGate fees (checked 15 October 2026)

GatewayPlatform feeMethodsSettlement
Card gateway1% + provider feeVisa, Mastercard, Amex, Maestro, Apple Pay, Google Pay, PayPal, Revolut, SEPAInstant USDC payouts
Crypto gateway1% + network feeBTC, ETH, USDC, USDT, SOL and moreAutomatic on-chain forwarding

There are no monthly fees, setup costs or rolling reserves. Minimum order amounts range from $1 to $30 depending on the payment provider, and provider and network fees are set by the underlying providers, not by PayMeGate. Current figures are on the PayMeGate pricing page.

Key features

  • PayPal at checkout: the hosted checkout shows "Pay with card", "Pay with crypto" and "Pay with PayPal".
  • Wallet payouts: funds settle to the wallet you control once an order is verified, with no manual withdrawals; the homepage says settlement usually takes about two minutes.
  • Signup: merchant signup asks for basic account and business information but does not request identity or business-document uploads.
  • Crypto extras: a unique address and QR per order, mass payouts with up to 19 splits and cross-chain payments, described on the crypto payment gateway page.
  • Tools: dashboard, scoped API keys, payment links and commerce plugins.

Best for

Online merchants, including high-risk sellers that mainstream processors turn away, who want PayPal and card checkout with stablecoin payouts. See the high-risk payment gateway overview.

Things to consider

  • Customers may need instant ID verification by mobile camera, depending on the payment method; some providers allow smaller orders without it.
  • PayMeGate provides software services only; payment processing is handled by independent third-party providers, and dispute handling is provider-specific.
  • Availability varies by merchant location, customer location and payment method, and no method is guaranteed worldwide.
  • Its acceptable use rules prohibit fake shops, adult content, gambling, intoxicating substances and any criminal activity.

2. MoonPay: PayPal-funded crypto purchases and stablecoin checkout

MoonPay is a crypto on-ramp. Its PayPal FAQ (updated 10 September 2026) says customers in the US, the UK and the EU (except Croatia, Hungary and Iceland) can buy and sell crypto with a linked PayPal account, and that sale proceeds go to the PayPal balance as cash.

Key features

  • Ramps: a headless or hosted widget that lets your users buy crypto inside your own interface.
  • Commerce: pay links for products, content and subscriptions; card payments for non-crypto users while the merchant receives crypto; Shopify, SDKs, APIs and webhooks.
  • Compliance controls: MoonPay Commerce verifies merchants through Sumsub and blocks access from OFAC-sanctioned countries and wallets.

Best for

Businesses that want customers to fund crypto with PayPal inside a branded flow, such as wallets, marketplaces and Web3 apps.

Things to consider

  • The PayPal account is a funding method for the customer's MoonPay purchase, not a PayPal checkout on your site. The customer's PayPal and MoonPay account countries must match, and a verified phone number is required.
  • MoonPay USA LLC is a registered money service business (NMLS ID 2071245), and customers go through MoonPay's own verification.
  • Commerce payments are described as irreversible, and refunds are up to the merchant.

3. NOWPayments: crypto gateway with partner on-ramps

NOWPayments is a crypto payment gateway with 350+ currencies listed and a 1% service fee on its pricing page. Its fiat on-ramp page lists Visa, Mastercard, Apple Pay, Google Pay and Revolut Pay through third-party providers, and its fiat knowledge-base article says a third-party processor converts fiat to crypto for you. PayPal is not mentioned on either page.

Crypto-first merchants outside the excluded jurisdictions who want many coins, mass payouts and plugins.

Things to consider

  • There is no PayPal route on NOWPayments' own pages, so it cannot replace a PayPal checkout.
  • The jurisdiction exclusions in its fiat terms rule it out for many US, UK and EU businesses.
  • Card on-ramp partners can reject an application, and onboarding with them requires KYB.

Fees and settlement: what a $100 PayPal transaction costs

On PayMeGate's card gateway, a $100 PayPal order carries the 1% platform fee ($1) plus the payment provider's fee, which varies by method and order. The payout arrives as USDC in your wallet. Compare that with the fees on your current PayPal business account and any currency conversion, and with the cost of moving money from a PayPal account to an exchange and then to a wallet yourself. If you receive stablecoins, also decide who converts them to US dollars, when, and at what exchange rate.

For crypto-to-crypto flows, network fees depend on the chain. Stablecoins on low-fee networks keep transaction fees predictable, and PayPal itself claimed at launch that crypto could mean up to 90% lower transaction costs than international card processing on cross border sales, a sign of how merchants see digital currencies and lower transaction fees; Bitcoin and Ethereum fees vary with demand. PayPal Credit and Pay Later are PayPal products that none of the three providers lists on its pages, so do not assume customers can use them.

What if a crypto transaction fails?

If a customer's crypto transaction fails, underpays or never confirms, the order should stay unpaid. PayMeGate initiates settlement only after payment confirmation, so deliver only when your dashboard or webhook shows the order as paid. With PayPal's Pay with Crypto, crypto payments cannot be disputed or charged back, so refunds are issued by the merchant in PYUSD.

How to integrate PayPal-to-crypto payments

  • Payment links: log in to the dashboard, create a link and send it by email, chat or social media. No code needed, and the customer chooses among the payment methods on the hosted page: PayPal account, card, digital wallets such as Apple Pay and Google Pay, or crypto.
  • API: create an order, redirect the customer to the hosted checkout, and confirm the payment with a signed webhook before you deliver.
  • Plugins: PayMeGate's payment gateway page lists ready-made integrations for WooCommerce, WHMCS, PrestaShop and OpenCart.
  • Wallet setup: use a wallet whose keys you control, and test a small order end to end before going live.

Risks and compliance

  • AML stays with you. A gateway that does not ask for documents at signup does not remove your own obligations under anti-money-laundering, consumer protection and tax law. Keep order records and customer details.
  • PayPal and card-network rules apply. Your products must be allowed under PayPal's acceptable use policy and card-network rules, whichever provider processes the payment.
  • Chargebacks and disputes. PayPal and card payments can still be disputed through the provider, even when your payout is in USDC. Crypto payments are generally irreversible, so refunds are your responsibility.
  • Sanctions. Do not sell to sanctioned countries or persons; providers such as MoonPay screen wallets and locations. You remain responsible for who you sell to.
  • Tax. Receiving or converting stablecoins can be a taxable event. Ask an accountant how to record USDC income.
  • Volatility. Stablecoins aim for a steady dollar value, but they are not bank deposits. Keep only what you need on-chain.

This is not legal or tax advice. Read our FAQ for how PayMeGate handles payment confirmation and customer checks.

Frequently asked questions

Can I accept cryptocurrency payments through PayPal?

Yes, if you are a US merchant approved for Expanded Checkout. PayPal's Pay with Crypto converts the buyer's crypto to USD; New York merchants are excluded for now.

How do I accept payments by PayPal and receive crypto?

Use a gateway that takes the customer's PayPal account at checkout and settles in a stablecoin. PayMeGate's card gateway lists PayPal and pays out in USDC to your wallet for 1% plus the provider fee.

Can I convert my PayPal balance to crypto?

Eligible users can buy crypto with the cash balance in their PayPal account, and MoonPay accepts PayPal balance for purchases in the US, UK and EU.

Is PayPal USD the same as USDT?

No. PYUSD is issued by Paxos Trust Company and USDT by Tether. Both aim to track the US dollar, but they have different issuers, reserves and networks.

Can I buy USDT with PayPal without KYC?

Not through regulated on-ramps: MoonPay and PayPal both verify their customers. Be wary of anyone offering PayPal-to-USDT swaps with no checks.

How do I transfer money from PayPal to a crypto wallet?

Buy a supported coin in your PayPal account and use its transfer feature, or buy crypto through an on-ramp such as MoonPay with PayPal and send it to your wallet address.

Which crypto payment gateway is the best?

It depends on the flow. For PayPal checkout with USDC payouts, PayMeGate; for PayPal-funded crypto purchases, MoonPay; for crypto-only checkout, a gateway such as NOWPayments.

What is high risk payment processing?

It is payment processing for businesses that banks see as higher risk, often due to chargebacks, regulation or reputation, such as subscriptions, travel or digital goods.

Who pays the PayPal fee?

In a standard PayPal checkout, the merchant's PayPal account is charged the processing fee on each transaction. With a gateway like PayMeGate, the merchant pays the platform fee plus the provider's fee.

How do I accept USDT payments?

Use a crypto gateway that generates a unique address per order, confirm the payment on-chain or by webhook, and only then deliver the order.

Can you send cryptocurrency to PayPal?

A PayPal account supports transfers in and out for supported coins and PYUSD across several blockchains. Check that the coin and network match before sending.

Final verdict

To accept PayPal payments in crypto, pick the flow first. If your customers want to pay from a PayPal account and you want USDC in your own wallet, PayMeGate covers it with a 1% platform fee, instant stablecoin payouts and a signup that asks for no ID or business-document uploads. MoonPay suits businesses that want customers to fund crypto purchases with PayPal, and NOWPayments fits crypto-first merchants outside the US, UK and EU. If you only want to take crypto and keep dollars, look at PayPal's Pay with Crypto. Whichever you choose, test a small order end to end and keep your compliance records in order.
